Visitor Surveying starts in May for Alaska Visitor Statistics Program (AVSP) |
As you conduct your business this summer, you may notice visitors being interviewed at various locations -- at airports, on cruise ship docks, at ferry terminals, and along the four border highways. The Alaska Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development has once again contracted with McDowell Group of Anchorage and Juneau to conduct the sixth in a series of visitor studies that have been taking place since 1985. The exit survey gathers information from out-of-state visitors on their activities, destinations, spending, satisfaction, trip planning, and demographics. The program also tracks the ratio of visitors versus residents by transportation mode in order to estimate visitor volume. The reports resulting from the survey help the State measure a critical component of the Alaska economy, in addition to helping CVBs and visitor industry businesses better understand their visitor markets. Summer surveying will take place between May 1 and September 30; fall/winter surveying will occur October 1 to April 30. Our friendly surveyors will be outfitted with red vests and clipboards, be on the lookout for them this summer! For more information, contact AVSP VI Project Manager Heather Haugland (heather.haugland@mcdowellgroup.net) or Caryl McConkie (caryl.mcconkie@alaska.gov) at the Alaska Division of Economic Development.
Alaska Tour Guide Training Program - "Train the Trainer" by DCCED |
The Alaska Tour Guide Training Program (ATGT) is a 2.5 day curriculum developed in 2010 by the Alaska Division of Economic Development and the U.S. Economic Development Administration. It is a simple, fun, and interactive curriculum for use in training new tour guides, or providing a refresher for experienced guides. In April, the Division of Economic Development will conduct a "Train-the-Trainer" workshop for individuals interested in training new or returning guides within their company, community, or organization, using the ATGT curriculum. The curriculum and instruction materials will be made available to those that complete the Train the Trainer workshop.
ATIA Board Supports Alaska Film Production Tax Credit Extension |
Last week, the ATIA Board of Directors voted to support the extension of the Film Production Tax Credit because it creates jobs for Alaskans and diversifies the economy. While films are in production in Alaska, there are measurable benefits to hotels, airlines, restaurants and others in the travel & hospitality industry. The high-profile production "Everybody Loves Whales" demonstrates the immediate impact brought by this fairly new industry to our communities and businesses.
ATIA also believes that the Film Production Tax Credit and film projects that portray images of Alaska do not replace the need to market Alaska as an attractive tourism destination. By definition, this tax credit promotes the new production of film projects within Alaska. It does not require such projects to promote Alaska as a destination, portray Alaska in a positive light, create a direct response mechanism for possible visitors, provide tools to facilitate planning a vacation to Alaska or connect viewers to Alaskan businesses. For these goals, a well funded Alaska tourism marketing program is required.
