Mt. Redoubt Information (week of March 22 -28)

Alaska's Mount Redoubt began it's latest eruption late in the evening on March 22, 2009. The volcano, located approximately 100 miles southwest of Anchorage, continued a series of eruptions into the next day. Redoubt has been in a heightened state of activity for several months with eruptions possible at any time. Historically, the volcano has remained active for periods of weeks to months.

So far, prevailing winds have carried most ash away from Anchorage (Alaska's aviation hub), however, that can change. Volcanologists with the Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) and meteorologists with the National Weather Service (NWS) are monitoring the volcano and the weather patterns and are providing updates as the situation develops - links to their sites are below.

As a safety precaution, some flights into and out of Anchorage's International Airport have been cancelled. Travelers with reservations into and out of Anchorage should contact their air carrier for the status of their flight.
