ATIA Announces 2016 Tourism Scholarship Awards

“The ATIA Foundation Scholarship Program helps support the education of young Alaskans interested in pursuing tourism as possible career path. This year, the ATIA Foundation awarded $25,000 in scholarships to students from across the state. Much of the financial support for these scholarships comes from ATIA members and industry partners, demonstrating our commitment to building an educated and trained tourism workforce,” said Sarah Leonard, ATIA President and CEO and ATIA Foundation board member.

  • $3,000 Un-Cruise Adventures Scholarship Awardee: Elizabeth Jagusch, Ketchikan, AK
    A one-year $3,000 scholarship funded through the support of Un-Cruise Adventures.

  • $2,500 Holland America Line Scholarship Awardee: Stuart Burns Relay, Valdez, AK
    A one-year, $2,500 scholarship funded through the support of Holland America Line.

  • $2,500 Kris Geldaker Memorial Scholarship Awardee: Bernadette Franulovich, Ketchikan, AK
    A one-year $2,500 scholarship funded through the ATIA Ketchikan Chapter (renewable for up to four years) for students pursuing a degree in tourism or maritime related field.

  • $2,500 White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad Scholarship Awardee: Patty Eagan, Fairbanks, AK
    A one-year, $2,500 scholarship funded through the support of White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad.

  • $2,000 ATIA Anchorage Chapter Scholarship Awardee: Jordyn Baker, Anchorage, AK
    A one-year, $2,000 scholarship funded through donations raised by the ATIA Anchorage Chapter.

  • $2,000 Premier Alaska Tours Scholarship Awardee: Brandon Smothers, Talkeetna, AK
    A one-year scholarship funded through the support of Premier Alaska Tours.

  • $1,500 All Alaska Tours Scholarship Awardee: Jordan Kesler, Eagle River, AK
    A one-year, $1,500 scholarship for students pursuing education in Business Administration. The successful candidate is eligible for a paid internship for 10 to 12 weeks during the period May-August.

  • $1,000 Alaska Cruise Association Scholarship Awardee: Meret Beutler, Seward, AK
    A one-year, $1,000 scholarship funded through the support of the Alaska Cruise Association.

  • $1,000 Alaska Railroad Scholarship Awardee: Shannon McLaughlin, Anchorage, AK
    A one-year, $1,000 scholarship funded through the support of the Alaska Railroad.

  • $1,000 Chuck West Memorial Scholarship Awardee: Kyle Milne, Cooper Landing, AK
    A one-year, $1,000 scholarship funded through an endowment in memory of Chuck West.

  • $1,000 ATIA Rural Scholarship Awardee: KattiJo Deeter, Fairbanks, AK
    A one-year scholarship funded through ATIA member pledges.

  • $1,000 ATIA 1-Year Scholarship Awardee: Paige Martin, Palmer, AK
    A one-year scholarship funded through ATIA member pledges.

  • $1,000 ATIA 1-Year Scholarship Awardee: Meret Beutler, Seward, AK

The ATIA Foundation was established to assist Alaskans desiring to further their education in the travel industry. Scholarship funds are raised through donations from industry members. Since 2001, the ATIA Foundation has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships to more than 150 individuals. Past scholarships have benefitted Alaska students pursuing their career in tourism from Ketchikan to Nome and Kodiak to Tok with a special Rural Award benefiting villages and small communities.
