The Alaska Travel Industry Association (ATIA) is encouraging Alaskans interested in furthering their education related to the tourism industry to apply to the ATIA Foundation scholarship program. The ATIA Foundation, established in 1992 as the Alaska Visitors Association Education Foundation, provides 1-year scholarships to students enrolled or who intend to enroll in a program of study related to a career in tourism. The deadline for applications is January 31, 2019.
“ATIA, through the ATIA Foundation, seeks to strengthen Alaska’s visitor industry through training and education of current and future tourism professionals. As Alaska’s second largest private sector employer, the tourism industry – and our state’s more than 2 million guests – rely on skilled employees in fields ranging from hospitality management to finance and public relations,” said Sarah Leonard, President and CEO of ATIA and ATIA Foundation board member. “The ATIA Foundation scholarship program develops the next generation of tourism leaders.”
Scholarship funds are raised from ATIA members and member businesses. In 2018, the ATIA Foundation awarded $25,000 to 17 individuals, with the average scholarship ranging between $500 and $1,000. Information about the ATIA Foundation and scholarship application materials are available on ATIA’s website, www.AlaskaTIA.org/foundation.
