Amidst a potential government shutdown and seemingly stalemate between the Governor and the legislature over the State’s budget, tourism industry leaders met this week. The Alaska Tourism Marketing Board (ATMB) met to review tourism marketing recommendations for the state’s program for the next year. The Alaska Travel Industry Association (ATIA) Board of Directors also met in Anchorage to review the association’s budget and member services. Currently, Alaska tourism marketing funding sits at $10.2 million. According to a press release from the Governor’s office dated May 18, 2015, Governor Walker line-item vetoed the majority of fiscal year 2016 budget items. Funded portions are allocated for public safety, like state troopers, prisons and some health and human services.
State employees were also notified that layoffs may be coming as early as July 1, leading to a government shutdown. Among most of the state’s services, the Alaska tourism marketing program, which is housed in the Department of Commerce, Community and Economic Development (DCCED) would also stop providing service.
