Coach Tour Guide

Term:      Part-time. Employment may be terminated or extended at the will of the VMHA.

Schedule: Part-time. Based on the 2022 Cruise Ship & Land Excursion Schedule (See Addendum A)

Wage: $20.00 hourly.

Benefits: As determined by VMHA Personnel Policies.

Reports to: Museum Services Manager

Employer: The VMHA will contribute to the State Unemployment fund for the employee and will provide Worker’s Compensation to cover the employee in case of a work-related injury.

Position Overview: Tour guide and history presenter on bus per port of call with cruise ship passengers traveling through Valdez to a destination on the Richardson Highway and back with stops along the way where passengers disembark the coach. Share a narrative of the history of Valdez and point out key places and things that support the history and natural landscape as seen on route.

Essential Job Functions: Helping people who visit become familiar with our community:

·         Knowledgeable about Valdez, the town layout and design (wayfinding), history, geography, natural history, flora and fauna of region.

·         Self-starter with the willingness to study and learn the history, etc. of the area on their own, if not already knowledgeable

·         Excellent public speaking skills

·         Ability to highlight the key points of the story with ease and in a timely manner on the route from the Kelsey Dock to points on route the Richardson Highway

·         Field and answer questions quickly and remain on track

·         Personable and friendly

·         Punctual, yet flexible.

·         Stand and speak on moving bus

·         Familiar with using technology, iPad

·         Ability to give clear directions to places of interest

·         Being able to interact with people from different backgrounds.

Helpful, but not necessary

·         Second language knowledge, French, German, Italian or Spanish

Tour guides will perform the following tasks:

·         Greet tour groups at the Kelsey Dock or other location as requested

·         Board the Coach of tour operator

·         Describe places and sites to visitors

·         Provide directions to visitors

·         Embark and disembark coach with groups at various stops

Job Requirements:
Training requirement. Starting ________2022 train with Curator of Education & Public Programs to thoroughly understand the tour content and delivery.
