Job Description

JOB STATEMENT/PURPOSE:

Under the direction of the Cultural Programs Manager, Coordinator, and program staff the apprentice position provides a variety of support functions to the Cultural Tourism operations at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. Apprentices will be assigned to a variety of different positions across the organization including Research, Collections, Cultural Tourism, Business Operations, Marketing, and Evaluation. As part of the recruitment process, candidates will be able to express their preferences for any of the above positions. More details about each position will be provided as part of the interview process.

Apprentices may support COVID-19 mitigation efforts as listed in ANHC’s COVID-19 Mitigation Plan, including disinfecting high-touch areas regularly to ensure the safety of staff and guests.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Cultural Tourism Apprentice

Function as an ambassador to inform guests about the history and culture of Alaska Native communities.
Provide clear and concise information to visitors regarding Alaska Native culture.
Ensure that the Alaska Native Heritage Center is a safe, inviting, and comfortable place for all visitors.
Appropriately answer sensitive questions regarding Alaska Native history and culture to educate visitors.
Monitor groups and ensure they do not adversely interact with property.
Facilitate cultural and educational programming, such as demonstrating Alaska Native games, dances, stories, and subsistence activities.
Review and learn the systems utilized for booking group tours.
Engage in meetings regarding cultural tourism operations.
Support external endeavors to facilitate development of cultural tourism operations.
Provide feedback about cultural tourism operations.
Analyze and input data as it relates to cultural tourism operations.
Review and learn procedures for private demonstrations and other cultural tourism programming.
Other duties as assigned.
Research & Collections Apprentice

Review and learn the systems utilized to catalogue and curate collections materials.
Analyze Collections Policies and engage with the process for upkeep and preservation of collections.
Engage in meetings regarding research and curatorial operations.
Execute backups and check on archival information regularly.
Assist in seeking bids from contractors and maintain contract files.
Research, analyze, and engage with process of accounting for the value of objects.
Analyze cultural competency of collections and research.
Engage with historical documents and cultural advisory committees. Analyze and input data as it relates to cultural tourism operations.
Develop written memos summarizing research regarding items, historical data, and other primary sources.
Other duties as assigned.
Business Operations Apprentice

Support the coordination of Board, Committee, and Department meetings, including scheduling, attending meetings, agenda preparation, recording minutes and other support as needed.
Supports overall Human Resources operations including employee onboarding and offboarding, personnel file management, data entry, benefits administration, and maintenance of organizational records.
Review and learn systems used to ensure the organization is compliant with guidelines for operational excellence, including Bill.com, Certify.com, Planning Pod, and QuickBooks accounting system of Vendor Bills, Customer Invoices and Facility Reservation Orders.
Support the administration of accounting processes such as daily sales, inventory, contract administration, and audit preparation.
Learn and practice operations of opening and closing for the admission intern staff and the gift shop clerks.
Provide support in data entry for Admissions, Gift Shop, Café, Facility Rentals, and other revenue streams.
Other duties as assigned.
Cultural Tourism Marketing Apprentice

Review and learn systems for graphic design and media platforms.
Develop written memos highlighting daily programming, staff, and project updates.
Practice networking, public speaking and representing ANHC at events within partners’ spaces.
Review and engage with multiple social media networks.
Analyze, maintain, and report on social media analytics and online reviews.
Analyze and input data as it relates to cultural tourism marketing.
Research, analyze and engage with process for running a micro campaign.
Develop content for social media, website, and app.
Research and design timeline for cultural tourism, Alaska Native history and ANHC story.
Support marketing of online gallery and highlighted products
Assist in photo, video, and audio bank content development.
Draft content for the ANHC newsletter
Other duties as assigned.
Evaluation Apprentice

Coordinate and monitor data collection schedules and activities.
Code, enter, and clean data.
Create, maintain, and manipulate databases.
Develop spreadsheets to track and report completion of participant evaluation tasks.
Conduct basic analysis of survey data and prepare tables and graphs based on analyses.
Conduct onsite and telephone interviews/surveys with service providers, program administrators, and participants.
Write project reports.
Conduct internet and literature searches.
Maintain evaluation files and client confidentiality.
Complete the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) courses entitled “Social and Behavioral Sciences Responsible Conduct of Research” and “Human Subjects Research.”
Follow HIPPA, FIRPA, and other data confidentiality regulations, policies, and procedures as appropriate.
Maintain a professional manner in all interactions with clients and/or other staff members.
Work as a member of multiple teams.

Individual will need good communication skills both verbal and written; must be able to lead and instruct a group in an effective manner.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to take initiative, multi-task, be a team-player, be flexible, adapt to shifting priorities, and prioritizing work.
Understand ANHC’s mission, direction, and history or be willing to receive training.
Be willing to learn, work and be always enthusiastic and helpful.
Have good attendance, be punctual and dependable.
Individual must have the ability to work independently, multi-task and have the ability to use good judgment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

Weather:

Indoors: Primarily in an environmentally controlled office;
Outdoors: Ability to work outside in all weather conditions typical for Anchorage Alaska Summers.
Noise level:

Quiet to moderate.
Physical requirements:

Employee is required to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
Frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk/hear, see, taste/smell, and carry weight/lift.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Passion for ANHC’s mission and values and a desire to learn more about Alaska Native Culture and history.
