POSITION SUMMARY

The Shipyard Safety Officer will be responsible for all safety functions regarding the Allen Marine shipyard including developing, implementing, and managing health and safety policies and procedures in the workplace. This is a full-time position based in beautiful Sitka, Alaska. Allen Marine offers excellent benefits, including employer paid health premiums.

The Shipyard Safety Officer facilitates programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skills training, emergency preparedness, proper job instruction, use of personal protective equipment, and proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials. Develops a systematic process to collect data and analyze the cause of accidents and generates the required reports. Additionally, the Shipyard Safety Officer implements initiatives to reduce and prevent accidents.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Be knowledgeable in all applicable OSHA Regulations (1910 and 1915 sections)
• Accompany regulatory authorities on any site visits
• Maintain OSHA Logs (From 300 and Form 301) for shoreside employees (AMI/AMT)
• Annually submit OSHA reports
• Responsible for authoring/updating Company Safety Manual
• Conduct Monthly Safety equipment inspections at shipyard, Safety Services, Main dock and old Sitka haul out facility
• Conduct annual fire extinguisher inspections at shipyard and other Allen Marine facilities in Sitka
• Perform duties as primary “Designated Shipyard Competent Person” conducting air testing and monitoring as required by OSHA and USCG – requires testing air in all vessel hull compartments and issuing gas free certificates for vessels that have been hauled out on land or on dry-dock prior to allowing shipyard employees to access those compartments.
• Conduct initial safety indoctrinations for all new shipyard employees
• Conduct annual audiograms (Hearing tests) for all shipyard employees
• Ensure employees who wear respirators get a respirator physical and annual respirator fit testing completed
• Conduct forklift classes and issue forklift certification cards and update shop list by tool room
• Maintain database of all shipyard employee safety training/tests
• Conduct daily “walk around” inspections to ensure employees are following rules and to identify any facility safety violations
• Conduct annual facility safety inspections at all company owned properties
• Conduct monthly meetings for all shipyard employees
• Update and inventory all hazardous materials in the shipyard and make sure all safety data sheets are up to date in binders as well as electronically
• Receive and process all incident reports for shore-side employees
o Ensure all reports are filled out correctly
o Send all incident reports, return to works and LS 202s or state OSHA forms to Alaska National Rep for processing

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE & TRAINING:

• OSHA General Industry Course or Equivalent
• Shipyard Competent Person Course
• Level 2 Fire Extinguisher Certification
• Understanding of OSHA Regulations
• Proficiency in Excel and Word
• Public Speaking – Presentations/Training
