Location: Macaulay Salmon Hatchery, Ladd Macaulay Visitor Center, in Juneau, Alaska
Starting Salary: $55,000 to $62,000 per year DOE plus benefits
Position Closing Date: September 23rd, 2024
Start Date: Between October 1st and November 15th, 2024
Douglas Island Pink & Chum Inc. (DIPAC) is a private non-profit organization which manages two salmon hatcheries in the Juneau area to produce salmon for the common property fisheries of northern southeast Alaska. DIPAC also manages the Ladd Macaulay Visitor Center.
DIPAC’s mission is to sustain and enhance valuable salmon resources of the State of Alaska for the economic, social, and cultural benefit of all citizens, and to promote public understanding of Alaska's salmon resources and salmon fisheries through research, education, and tourism.
General Job Description:
The Tourism and Education Manager is subject to the authority of the Executive Director. (S)He is responsible for assuring that the Tourism Department runs smoothly, efficiently, and profitably. (S)He assists the Director in the preparation of reports, budgets, new projects development, and such assignments as management directs. The Manager position requires 7-day a week administration of the Tourism Department during the cruise ship season. This requirement may be met, in part, through delegation of duties to other tourism personnel, but will occasionally require weekend hours. The Tourism and Education Manager is a permanent/salaried full-time employee.
Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Promote DIPAC within the community and the visitor industry.
• Oversee tour operations.
• Maintain contacts and contracts with cruise ship companies, tour operators, and other industry representatives.
• Advertise and promote DIPAC to travelers.
• Stay active and familiar with the tourism industry.
• Manage retail store.
• Hire, train, and supervise the Visitor Center Supervisor, Aquarium Curator, various summer seasonal staff.
• Promote, book, and coordinate visitor center event rentals.
• Oversee and assist the Visitor Center Supervisor with developing, planning and coordinating educational programs.
• Work with the Maintenance Engineer to assure that the Visitor Center and adjoining areas are well maintained and improved as appropriate and feasible.
• Prepare department reports and assist the Executive Director with preparation of the department budget.
• Provide for orderly succession planning and team building within his/ her department
• Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
The Tourism and Education Manager must have a working knowledge of general business practice and personnel management. (S)He must have strong background in retail sales and Alaska’s tourism industry. (S)He must exhibit good organizational skills. (S)He must be able to interrelate with other tourism organizations, educational agencies, and fisheries groups. Knowledge about Alaska’s salmon and fishing industries is a plus.
The Tourism & Education Manager must be able to show enthusiasm for public relations and sales and be able to convey this enthusiasm to those persons immediately under his/her supervision.
• Graduated from an accredited college or university with a degree in business, tourism, marketing, education or related field, and at least four years of retail experience and public relations experience.
• Have an understanding of the Juneau tourism industry, retail sales, public speaking, and customer service.
• (S)He must have general computer and writing skills, and be detail oriented.
• Must be able to supervise employees effectively and fairly and must exhibit enthusiasm that (s)he can convey to employees.
• (S)He must have the interpersonal skills necessary in dealing with a wide range of individuals in a variety of circumstances.
• Must be able to obtain an Alaska driver’s license. A job offer for this position is contingent upon a clean motor vehicle record for DIPAC's drivers insurance approval.
• Ability to pass a background check is mandatory.
