What You Will Be Doing:

The Museum Protection and Visitor Services Manager manages the visitor galleries at both the Alaska State Museum in Juneau and the Sheldon Jackson Museum in Sitka. The incumbent coordinates and provides tours for school groups from all across the State, travel industry partners such as tour operators, travel writers and social media influencers, visiting scholars, and partner agencies. This position manages a unit of 4 full time staff members and 12 or more on-call, short term, volunteer and docent staff members who provide service to 70,000 visitors a year. This position will require some work on nights and weekends to cover special events in the galleries, VIP tours, rentals, and emergencies.

Who We Are Looking For:

Our ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience:

Experience managing a customer service or reception desk.
Knowledge of education practices in museums and experience giving tours or speaking to groups.
Experience supervising full-time, part-time and volunteer staff.
Ability to react to and take lead role in a security or emergency situation to safeguard health and collections.

Special Note: The incumbent must possess a valid driver's license and be able to lift and drag 50 pounds in order to perform the essential functions of the position.

Minimum Qualifications
One year of experience supervising interpretive services and ensuring the safety and security of people and property in a museum, national/state/local park, historical site, or other cultural institution with a similar environment. This experience is met by service as a Museum Protection & Visitor Services Supervisor with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

OR Substitution:

Two years of experience supervising employees who provide information and services to customers, tourists, or the general public. Examples of qualifying experience include, but are not limited to, working as a: supervisory lecturer or tour guide in a museum, park, historical site, or recreational area; travel agency manager; or hotel front desk manager.

OR Substitution:

Two years of experience supervising employees who provide security monitoring and response that included a high level of public interaction. This includes work such as security supervisor in an office building, casino, shopping mall, zoo, museum, park, historical site, recreational area, and so on. Experience supervising night watchmen, security guards monitoring vacant facilities or closed businesses, and similar work that lacks a high level of public interaction will not meet this requirement.

OR Substitution:

Two years of post-secondary education from an accredited college that included at least 24 semester/32 quarter hours in any combination of the following courses: history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, or other subject related to the management and protection of cultural resources.
