Study Leader (Alaska-based)

Job Description

Road Scholar's West Coast Operations team is looking for a knowledgeable guide or Master Naturalist to act as a Study Leader on our 10-day program, On the Road program, Amazing Alaska: The Last Frontier, From Mountains to the Sea. The team is looking for coverage on the following departures:
6/3/2023 – 6/12/2023
7/8/2023 – 7/17/2023
7/22/2023 – 7/31/2023
8/12/2023 – 8/21/2023

The Study Leader will provide educational content, narration and interpretation at program sites, and lead educational activities and lectures for participants throughout the program for groups of up to 24 participants per departure. A Group Leader (Tour Director) will also be with them on each departure to handle program logistics and participant needs. Road Scholar will cover the cost of the Study Leader’s travel to and from the program, as well as accommodation and meals during the program.

Educational content will be up to the Study Leader and their expertise provided the content correlates with the locations and themes of the program. Some example topics include:
• Alaska vocabulary
• Orientation to the program, highlighting places and things to look for
• Introduction to Alaska and its people, Fairbanks, and interior Alaska
• History of Alaska from the Pleistocene to statehood
• Arctic National Wildlife Refuge – Wildlife/oil controversy
• Wildlife from the Arctic to the temperate rainforest
• Major Alaska Ecosystems
• Introduction to the Subarctic and native culture of the Interior
• Alaska issues from ANSCA, ANILCA, and Resource Extraction
• Introduction to the temperate rainforest and native culture of Southeast
• Geology of southern Alaska (emphasis on Alaska Range south to Seward)
• Glaciers and between ice ages
